Fire Department
![]() |
The department provides fire protection for the City of York and, by inter-local agreement, the York Rural Fire District. With this agreement the department responds to fire emergencies in the 96 square mile district that circumferences the city. The department houses, staffs, and maintains all apparatus owned by the York Rural Fire District.
The York Fire Department is active within the county's mutual aid system. The York County Mutual Aid Association owns and maintains a state-of-the-art communications system composed of three repeaters strategically located in the county. With this system additional manpower and firefighting equipment is available through the county dispatch system within minutes. The communications system, including tactical frequencies, allows all fire departments within the county system the ability to communicate with each other.
Emergency Medical Services are also provided through the department. The York Fire Department provides an advanced life support level of pre-hospital care. EMS services provided are not limited to emergency responses within the City of York. Again, with an inter-local agreement in place, the department provides the County Ambulance service. Emergency responses are part of this agreement for a major part of the county, including inter-facility transfers for the local hospitals. All paramedics meet with the department's Medical Director, the City Physician and a Staff Liaison from the local hospital on a monthly basis to audit the runs for the previous month. Constant review within the medical community assures the highest quality of pre-hospital care available.
