Solid Waste Disposal

#

The York Area Solid Waste Agency is jointly owned by York County and the City of York. The City Public Works Department operates the site.

The disposal site serves the City of York, York County communities, and some adjacent counties and communities. It has an estimated life of 80 years.

Site facilities include landfill, transfer station, equipment storage building, and recycling facility.

  • The Agency has contracted with Mosaic to operate a recycling center onsite.
  • This is a drop-off facility with some collection provided to volume users.
  • Most recyclable materials are processed by baling, crushing and/or chipping prior to shipment.

    User fees finance the solid waste disposal operation. User fees are weight-based per ton with all material weighed over state-approved scales.

    The Operations Superintendent can make provisions for no-charge concrete debris disposal at a different site.

    Recycling Center Provides Remote Drop Sites

    Two trailers for depositing recyclable materials are located at N. Lincoln Avenue and 17th Street -- former Lovegrove's Grocery parking lot, and S. Lincoln Avenue and Nobes Rd -- Pamida parking lot. Citizens must sort their materials into marked bins: paper, plastic, cardboard and cans. These conveinent trailers are available at all hours except on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings when the trailers could be in transit to the Recycling Center for emptying.

    Some simple "dos and dont's" for using the recycling trailer:

    DO:
    Sort materials according to labeled bins making sure that wind cannot blow materials around the neighborhood;
    Leave your glass containers in the bag you brought them in to cut down on breakage within the bin;
    Note that food and beverage cans are recyclable, but lawn chairs, storm doors and window frames are not;
    Look for the recyclable symbol on all plastic milk, pop, and laundry product containers--must be a number 1 or 2;
    Cut and collapse all cardboard as flat as possible

    DON'T:
    Leave materials stacked next to trailer;
    Leave materials in parking lot when trailer is not avaliable on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings;
    Deposit used plastic shopping bags, bubble wrap or styrofoam--these are not recyclable
